Culture Night / The Politics of Migrant Images

Would we have a different asylum and integration policy in Denmark if we had different representations of refugees and immigrants? How can we produce new images capable of creating community between new and old citizens?
Trampoline House and its exhibition space CAMP / Center for Art on Migration Politics invite you to a Culture Night with soup kitchen, international art exhibition, and a debate on The Politics of Migrant Images with Danish-based Rushy Rashid (debater and radio host), Khaterah Parwani (lawyer and debater), Natasha Al-Hariri (lawyer and debater), Tarek Ziad Hussein (law student, author, and debater), Aydin Soei (sociologist, author, and lecturer), Farhiya Khalid (journalist and historian), Nermin Durakovic (visual artist), Yannick Harrison (researcher, editor, and political economist), and more.

Debate 1: The only title I want is ... human
Four experts with refugee/immigrant experience reflect on seeing themselves represented as 'victims,' 'oppressed,' 'freeloader,' or 'overachievers' in Danish cultural life and in the public debate. Come and discuss with them how images contribute to marginalizing minority groups, what role our institutions and media play in this stereotyping, and how we can create new images that strengthen the cohesion between new and old citizens. Debaters: Natasha Al-Hariri (lawyer and debater), Nermin Durakovic (visual artist), Farhiya Khalid (journalist and historian). Facilitator: Rushy Rashid (debater and radio host).

View the international group exhibition Decolonizing Appearance, guest curated by Nicholas Mirzoeff, at CAMP or play the New Immigrant Game, a game developed by the performance company There There.
There There (a 100% Eastern European performance company) have spent the last week in residence at CAMP. During this time, they collaborated with local Eastern Europeans on a performative game, based on participants’ experiences as immigrants in Denmark. Presenting the initial stage of this project, There There and their collaborators will introduce the audience to their process and invite them to play the new immigrant game with them.

Debate 2: Immigrant Imaging and Populist Democracy
What influence do stereotypical images of refugees and immigrants have on voters, politicians, and recent legislative initiatives in Denmark such as the "Ghetto Plan", the "Burka and Niqab Ban," and proposals to establish Danish asylum and deportation centers outside of Denmark? Would we have a different asylum and integration policy in Denmark if we had different representations of refugees and immigrants? Come and discuss with Tarek Ziad Hussein (law student, author, and debater), Khaterah Parwani (lawyer and debater), and Aydin Soei (sociologist, author, and lecturer). Facilitator: Yannick Harrison (researcher, editor, and political economist).
10–12:
Bar and dance party with DJs from Trampoline House
Every week, Trampoline House and CAMP are visited by hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees who make use of the various job training, counseling, and education offers offered by the house. We therefore expect a very mixed audience at the event. The event is conducted in Danish. Simultaneous interpretation to English, Farsi, Arabic, and Tigrinya is offered to include everyone in the discussion.
